Mercury: Your State
Mercury pollution is so pervasive that 45 states have posted mercury-related fish consumption advisories—health warnings to avoid or limit consumption of certain fish due to mercury contamination. In half of these states, mercury warnings cover every lake and/or river in the state. Moreover, mercury warnings have increased substantially over the last decade. As former EPA administrator Mike Leavitt said, “The more waters we monitor, the more we find mercury . . . .”
For more information about mercury levels in fish, mercury advisories, and power plants that emit mercury in your state, see our “Reel Danger” and “Fishing for Trouble” reports. To learn about a loophole in the latest version of the Bush administration’s “Clear Skies” plan that would let nearly 40% of the nation’s power plant units off the hook for reducing their mercury pollution, see our report, “The Fine Print.”
